Construction Play

September 7, 2025

When you think of construction play, do you think of a pile of blocks & bricks; or orange witches’ hats, stop signs and bulldozers? Perhaps it’s that big pile of cardboard boxes in the corner of the room?

Whatever ‘construction’ looks like to you, as educators we know the importance of providing children with this type of play!

Construction play, whether using open-ended materials like blocks & natural materials or even more prescriptive construction themed provocations (construction vehicles, bricks etc), supports & benefits children’s development across multiple domains.

Some of the key benefits:

1. Boosts Cognitive Development

When children build, they are experimenting with problem-solving, spatial awareness, balance, and cause-and-effect. They learn how to plan, test ideas, and adapt when things don’t go as expected. These critical thinking skills form the foundation for future learning in maths, science, and technology.
(Key elements of EYLF Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners)

2. Encourages Creativity and Imagination

Construction play gives children the freedom to turn ideas into reality. Whether they’re building a castle, a spaceship, or a zoo, they’re using creativity to bring stories and ideas to life. Every tower or bridge is a reflection of their imagination.

3. Strengthens Social and Emotional Skills

When children build together, they learn teamwork, cooperation, and communication. Negotiating who gets which block, working towards a shared goal, or celebrating a finished project helps develop empathy and resilience. And yes, sometimes constructions collapse! Allowing educators to provide a safe space to practice patience and perseverance.
(Skills aligned with EYLF Outcome 1: Sense of identity and Outcome 2: Connection with their world)

4. Supports Fine and Gross Motor Skills

From carefully balancing a block on top of another, to lifting and carrying larger materials; construction play builds strength, coordination, and dexterity. These physical skills are vital for greater life tasks like writing, dressing and overall independence.

5. Introduces STEM Concepts Early

Through building, children naturally explore principles of engineering, measurement, geometry, and physics. They begin to understand size, weight, symmetry, and stability, all while having fun. This early introduction to STEM concepts builds confidence for future learning.
(Skills embedded in Outcome 4’s processes like experimenting and investigating)

6. Fosters Language and Communication

As children describe their creations, explain their thinking, or work alongside peers, they expand vocabulary and practice expressive language. Construction play becomes a rich opportunity for storytelling and meaningful conversations.
(Aligned with EYLF Outcome 5: Effective communicators)
