Self-Care for Early Childhood Educators: Filling Your Cup First

October 23, 2025

Being an early childhood educator is an incredible role, that’s no secret.

Every day, we nurture little hearts, spark curiosity and guide kiddos as they dip their toes into the world of learning.

But let’s be real, it’s also a massive job!

Long hours, busy rooms, endless energy (the children, not always us!), it can be draining if we don’t take care of ourselves.

‘Self-care’ is such a hot topic now, it’s easy to pass over it & treat it as a fad. Everyone is talking about meditation, mindfulness & finding ‘zen’. But it’s not just about bubble baths and spa days (although those are nice, too!). It doesn’t have to be an expensive exercise; you don’t need to go out and buy a bunch of essential oils or colouring books!

Self-care is simply about looking after your body, mind and heart so that you can keep showing up as the amazing educator you are!

Here are some gentle reminders and practical tips to help you fill your own cup:

Remember to Breathe
Take a few moments each day to slow down.

Deep breathing, a moment in nature, journaling or even a simple cup of tea can reset your mind.

These small pauses or ‘hyphens’ in your day can help you approach your work with more patience and presence.

Share the Load
It’s no secret, working with small humans is rewarding but also rather demanding of our brain space!

A strong support network can make all the difference. Share your challenges with colleagues who understand the demands of the job. Having someone to talk to, whether it’s a coworker, mentor, or friend, helps lighten the load!

But remember, check first if someone has capacity to take on your problems!

Protect your Energy
Building on from the last point, protecting your own energy is SO important!

Set boundaries around your time and energy. If you don’t have space to hear about someone’s issues, guide them to someone else who can help.
Remember it’s okay to say “no” when you’re stretched too thin.

Nobody is going to judge you for looking after yourself and by doing so, you’re allowing yourself the space/time to be the best educator possible

It’s also so easy to take elements of your work home, both mentally & physically, so try to maintain a strong work/home boundary.

Move your Body
Physical wellbeing boosts mental wellbeing!

Our work is exhausting and it’s very easy to fall into sedentary habits when we finally have a moment to ourselves! Seeking the ‘flomp’ instead of moving. Whether it’s yoga, a walk after work, or simply stretching during the day; moving your body helps reduce stress and actually keeps your energy up! Even dancing with the children counts!

Celebrate the WINS!
It’s so easy to focus on what’s left to do, how many obs still need to be written etc but don’t forget to celebrate the small victories each day!

Whether it’s helping a child recognise their name, noticing a shift in an unsettled child’s day, creating a beautiful learning provocation, or simply making it through a tough day!

The wins are always there, sometimes you just need to remember to look for them!

In conclusion, while you dedicate your life to caring for others, you deserve rest, care and kindness. 💕
